If you live in the FEMA floodplain world, one of the best opportunities for networking is attending your state's Association of Floodplain Managers. I am in Alabama, and the Alabama Association of Floodplain Managers (AAFM) is a great resource for a number of professionals: water resources engineers, floodplain managers, academia, city engineers, county engineers, EMA staff, environmental professionals, scientists, regulatory staff, and many more. At AAFM, we focus on both technical and non-technical presentations that focus on anything and everything floodplain related.

Some examples are:

  1. Dam safety

  2. hazard mitigation

  3. Letters of Map Revision (CLOMRs and LOMRs)

  4. Elevation certificates (ECs)

  5. Funding....and many more

AAFM is having our fall conference in Orange Beach, and it's a great opportunity to meet many of the state's floodplain administrators, professionals in the field, and learn a little along the way. You can sign up on AAFM's site here, and should consider a membership as well!

Don't forget about the national level organization either. The annual conference is during the summer, and in 2025 it is being hosted in New Orleans. Find more information on the National Conference here. Abstracts are due 10/31 if you want to present!
